Xerophyta Retinervis - Black Stick Lily or Monkeys Tail
Xerophyta Retinervis is a deciduous perennial plant native to Southern African countries. It forms tall thick upright stems, covered in the fibrous bases of previous leaves, the stem often blackened by natural bushfires.
Fragrant star shaped, pink flowers often appear after bush fires or rain, with tufts of strap like leaves forming along the stems. Old leaf bases help funnel rain into the center of the plant, where densely packed stem roots help absorb the water as well as underground roots.
The species is tolerant of extreme conditions such as drought, fire, and low temperatures.
Grows up to 2 metres tall.
