Clump-forming succulent with velvety, upright stems. Wrinkled, maroon flowers with purple and yellow marks are produced in summer.
Grow in greenhouse where not hardy. In warm, dry climates grow in raised beds or desert garden.
The large flowers, which are up to 30cm across appear in summer.
Young plants need extra phosphorus to encourage good root development.
Minimum temperature around 5°C
