Silene Dioica - Red Campion
Native across northern and central Europe, this short lived perenniel reaches up to around 90cm tall and grows in clumps. Leaves are a deep green, spoon shaped and hairy, ovate in shape and around 8cm long.
Flowers are dark to light pink, sometimes red in colour, around 3cm across, growing on tall stems. Each flower has 5 petals, deeply notched, and bloom profusely from late spring to early summer (and then continue to bloom periodically through autumn months). Male and female flowers grow on different plants.
Flowers are very attractive to insects!
