Pseudotsuga Menziesii v Menziesii - Douglas Fir

30 Seeds

A native to North America and naturalised across Europe and parts of South America, this evergreen conifer reaches heights of up to 100m and can live for 500 years (or more)!

On young trees, the bark is smooth and grey, growing thick and cork-like as it ages. Mature trees can reach up to 2.5m in diameter with bark up to 35cm thick, with distinctive growth fissures travelling up the trunk. Leaves are flat and soft, needle-shaped, up to 4cm long and completely covering the branches.

The leaves can be brewed into pine-needle tea, tasting somewhat citrusy, and the leaves, bark and resin have been used historically by Native Americans to treat various illnesses. The timber is strong and long-lasting, used often in construction and carpentry.

Hardy to -15°C.
