Passiflora Quadrangularis - Giant Granadilla
Native to tropical South America the Passiflora Quadrangularis has several common names such as Giant Granadilla, Grenadine or even the Giant Tumbo. It produces the largest fruit of any passiflora species, which is edible.
A climbing and vining plant, it can grow taller than 12m, and will require growing support.
Its flowers are the true show-stoppers, light red with purple and white filaments and very fragrant. Its fruit, also known as badea, can reach 25cm long; the pulp is edible and is frequently used as a drink or ice cream. A tea can also be made from the leaves to treat high blood pressure and diabetes.
Please see a GP before using in a medicinal context.
Frost tender, it should ideally be kept under glass and kept at a minimum temperature of 15°C.
