Mentha Aquatica - Water Mint
Native across Europe, northwest Africa and southwest Asia, this perennial reaches up to 90cm tall and grows close to streams and rivers. Rhizomes spread widely and vigorously to clump up to 50cm across.
Leaves are ovate in shape, around 6cm long with toothed margins. When in flower, the blooms are tiny and grow in dense terminal spikes, pink-purple in colours. Blooms from mid to late -summer. Both the leaves and the flower are aromatic, smelling like mint.
Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other insects!
The leaves can be used to make a herbal tea, or added to salads.
Fully hardy to -10°C.
