Chelidonium Majus – Greater Celandine / Wartweed

1000 Seeds

Native across Europe and the British Isles and introduced across North America, this perennial typically grows in clumps, reaching up to around 1m tall. The erect stems are brittle and lightly hairy, producing a bright yellow-orange sap when broken. The leaves are pinnate, up to 30cm long and 15cm wide, with lobed leaflets.
The flowers are a sunny yellow and grow in loose umbels, producing four petals per flower, only around 2cm across but growing in groups of up to 6 flowers per cyme. Blooms appear from late spring through summer and sometimes into the mid-autumn months. Highly attractive to bees!
The sap has traditionally been used as a folk remedy for various maladies including atopical dermatitis and the eradication of warts. Please contact a GP before using in a medicinal context. DO NOT EAT, and keep away from eyes.

Please note Chelidonium is considered toxic. Keep away from pets and small children.
