Native across southern Africa, this small tree can reach up to 8m tall with many branches that arch so deeply they sometimes touch the ground. The bark is smooth and pale grey, with stems appearing knobbled and occasionally covered in blunt spines. Leaves are spoon-shaped, often growing in groups of three, up to 8cm long.

The white flowers are sweet scented, trumpet-shaped, up to 10cm in diameter. Blossoms can be irregular, with flowers appearing from midsummer through to winter. Open at night, the flowers are pollinated in the wild by moths.
