Hyophorbe Lagenicaulis - Bottle Palm
Hyophorbe Lagenicaulis is a dwarf palm native to Mauritius and the surrounding islands.
A slow growing species, it has an impressive swollen, bottle shaped trunk in younger specimens, but in older palms this becomes less pronounced as it elongates and flattens.
On top of the trunk is a crown of 4 to 8 leaves, up to 3 meters in length with many, 60 cm leaflets. White or cream coloured flowers appear on mature palms followed by green 3 cm fruits ripening to black.
Grows to a maximum height of around 3 to 4 meters.
Very cold sensitive, keep above 5°C, lower will cause
leaf damage and can be killed at 0 °C
