A Restio is an unusual class of pants, falling somewhere between bamboo, rushes, grasses and horsetail, but related to none of them. They are all native to South Africa.
Reaching up to 1m tall, the stems of Elegia Cuspidata stay neatly clumped as the rhizome does not spread. Leaf stems are long and needle-like, with dark brown sheathes that drop off leaving brown rings behind.
Brown flowers bloom in a brush shape within brown bracts during the summer months.
Likely to be damaged or killed in cold winters. Providing the plant is well protected with a winter mulch it will reshoot from the ground.
Plant can withstand temperatures down to -5°C (23°F)
