A Restio is an unusual class of pants, falling somewhere between bamboo, rushes, grasses and horsetail, but related to none of them. They are all native to South Africa.
Reaching up to 2m tall, the stems are thick and divided into sections similar to bamboo plants.
Leaf stems are rounded, long, with dark brown sheathes that drop off leaving brown rings behind.
Small brown flowers bloom from autumn onwards.
Likely to be damaged or killed in cold winters. Providing the plant is well protected with a winter mulch it will reshoot from the ground.
Plant can withstand temperatures down to -5°C (23°F)
