Diospyros lotus, a native to southern Asia, particularly from China, grows up to 30 m tall in ideal conditions, but will generally be smaller when grown in cultivation.
Flowers are small and yellow-green, and are dioecious, and has long glossy dark green oval/lance shaped leaves.
The date plum is a close relative to the persimon (Also known as a Sharon Fruit) but produces smaller fruit - around 2cm in diameter, which are yellow yellow and turns purple-brown when fully ripe. Like the persimon, the date plum looses its astringency when fully ripe and has a rich tasty flavour!
