Purple Yam - Ube
Dioscorea Alata also known as the Purple Yam or Ube, is a vine like plant grown worldwide in the tropics, which produces pink to purple fleshed underground edible tubers.
There are many varieties of Yam throughout the world, and have many culinary applications.
In the Philippines, ube is cooked with sugar and eaten as a sweetened dessert or jam called ube halaya which is a bright violet color.
Yams should be cooked before eating.
