Also known as the cannonball tree, Couroupita Guianensis is a deciduous tree native to the rainforests of Central and South America.
It can reach up to 35m tall and has leaves between 3-15cm long. Flowers appear in racemes up to 80cm long and are strongly scented, being especially fragrant at night, typically brightly coloured red or pink with yellowish tips, some trees flower until the entire trunk is covered with blooms.
Incredibly attractive to bees!
The fruit, which can be up to 20 cm in diameter, lends the tree its ‘cannonball’ name, is edible but can have an unpleasant smell.
Native Amazonians use extracts of the tree to treat many maladies including tumours, inflammation, toothache and skin conditions.
