Pachycereus Pringlei - Elephant Cactus

15 Seeds

Pachycereus Pringlei, commonly known as the Elephant Cactus, is native to northwest Mexico, and notable for being the tallest cactus species in the world, with a maximum recorded height of 19.2m tall!

A slow growing cactus, it resembles the saguaro cactus (Carnegia Gigantea) although more heavily branched, with less ribs on the stems, and spiny fruit. Extra columns branch from near the base. Mature species can reach up to 20m in height and 5m in spread, with trunk diameters up to 2m wide.

This cactus has an incredible symbiotic relationship with bacterial and fungal colonies on its wide-spreading root systems, which allow them to grow on bare rock even where no soil is available. The bacteria breaks down nitrogen from the air and can break down the rock to produce nutrients, and is even introduced inside the seeds for the next genreation.

Requires full sun throughout the summer and regular watering provided the cactus is allowed to drain. Mature specimens can resist down to -4°C for short periods of time, but are best kept above 0°C in winter to avoid ugly spots on the branches.

Minimum recommended temperature 5°C
