Baptisia Australis - Blue False Indigo
Baptisia Australis is a native to central and eastern USA, it is a herbaceous perennial, growing from spreading rhizomes
with deep roots, enabling the plant to withstand periods of drought.
Blue/green leaves are arranges alternately on stems, and the plant forms tall spikes of masses of purple/blue pea like flowers from early summer, each around 2.5 cm long, followed by dark seed pods.
North american tribes traditionally used this plant as a blue dye.
A wonderful plant for the garden, it has achieved the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Grows to a height of around 1 to 1.5 meters and a spread of up to 1 meter.
Fully hardy to -15°C and under.
