Agave Americana ssp Protoamericana - Century Plant
Agave Americana ssp Protoamericana is a native to Mexico and the southern states of the USA including Arizona, Texas and New Mexico, although widely cultivated and naturalised in many areas from the Meditteranean to Australia.
Although given the common name of the Century plant, it has a lifespan of around 15 to 30 years, flowering only once in its lifetime before the plant dies, but will produce suckering off-shoots for continued growth.
It is a large growing succulent plant with thick fleshy grey green leaves, each to a length of up to 1.5 meters, with prickly margins and a sharp spine at the tip. The inflorescence is a tall spike, growing up to 8 or 9 meters with many yellow flowers.
Can grow to an impressive size with a spread of around 3 meters in ideal conditions.
Fairly cold hardy can cope with temperatures down to -8°C, but MUST be given good drainage. Agaves generally like it dryer in their winter period.
