Native across Europe and Asia and naturalised in the British Isles, this perennial can reach up to around 60cm tall. Producing erect stems from rhizomes that produces roots at the nodes, with ovate-shaped leaves often growing in groups of five.

In the summer months small white flowers are produced in umbels, highly attractive to butterflies and moths!

The leaves are edible, with a taste and aroma similar to parsley. Fresh young leaves are preferred, while older leaves can be cooked like spinach, but once the plant has flowered leaves tend to become bitter and have a laxative property.

Used historically to treat gout and arthritis.
